We don't know anything about John's early life.
When the First World War broke out in August 1914 John was one of thousands of men from Manchester who enlisted into the City's Pals Battalions. John joined the 7th City Battalion, which was taken over by the Army and named the 22nd Battalion of The Manchester Regiment. He was assigned to Number X Platoon of C Company.
John's service number was 20606, which means he enlisted in late November or early December 1914. As well as being a member of his platoon John joined the Battalion Bugle Band as a Drummer.
The 22nd Battalion went to France on the 12th November 1915. After this period we don't know anything about John's war service.
We do know that he survived the war. His life afterwards remains a mystery.
