India Medal with clasp 'Relief of Chitral 1895'

Unfortunately we don't know this man's first name or anything about his early life and family.

We know that he served in the 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment during the late 19th Century and reached the rank of Sergeant. We don't know his service number.

His medal tells us that he served in the Chitral Expedition of March and April 1895. This Expedition was sent to relieve a British force under siege by local tribesmen in the fortress of Chitral, in what is now northern Pakistan. The relief force that this soldier was a part of fought its way into the Malakand Pass and crossed extremely mountainous terrain to reach Chitral on the 19th April.

The 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment did not take part in this Expedition, so this soldier must have been attached to another unit. Unfortunately we don't know which one.

The rest of his life remains a mystery.
