Unfortunately we don't know this man's first name or anything about his early life and family.

This man served in the 6th Royal Lancashire Militia (RLM). This was made up of men who trained as soldiers for a short period each year, and lived as civilians for the rest of the time. His first Long Service and Good Conduct Medal tell us he had served for 18 years and reached the rank of Sergeant before 1881. We know this because he is listed as a member of the 6th RLM. This became the 3rd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment on the 1st July 1881.

The second Long Service and Good Conduct medal was awarded to Sergeant Major J. Ferguson, number 802, of the Manchester Regiment Militia, in 1893. He was a Quartermaster Sergeant serving at the Regimental Depot in Ashton-under-Lyne when this medal was awarded.

His medals were donated to the Museum of the Manchester Regiment in September 2000.
