General Service Medal with ‘Palestine’ clasp

John was born on the 28th May 1917. Nothing is known of his life before he joined the Army.

The exact date of when he joined the Army is not known, but it was likely to be sometime during the mid-1930s. He was given the service number 3525577. He served in what was known at the time as the British Mandate of Palestine. The 1st Battalion of the Manchester Regiment was stationed there in 1938. Further details of his service are not known. He was discharged on the 17th March 1939.

After the war he lived at 48 Queens Road in Chadderton, but further details of his life are not known.

John’s medal was donated to the museum collections in 1949.
