British War Medal
We don't know anything about Thomas' family or early life.
When the First World War broke out in August 1914 Thomas felt a close enough connection to Oldham to want to join the local Territorial Force unit, the 10th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. We believe he enlisted in December 1914 or January 1915.
Thomas didn't serve abroad until after members of the Territorial Force were given new service numbers in March 1917. This suggests he could have been a member of the 2/10th Battalion, which moved to France at around this time. Thomas' new service number was 376018; we don't know his original number.
We have no reason to believe that Thomas was transferred to another unit, and we know he survived the war, but we don't know the details of where he served or what he did.
The rest of Thomas' life unfortunately remains a mystery. As well as his British War Medal, he was also awarded the Allied Victory Medal for his Army service.
